Guantanamo Blues is the third episode in season one of Lilyhammer.

  • Directed by: Geir Henning Hopland
  • Writers:  Anne Bjørnstad, Eilif Skodvin, Steven Van Zandt

Plot[]

The episode opens with Frank Tagliano and Torgeir Lien interrogating Thomas Aune because he stole expensive champagne from their bar by ordering it and then giving them a card that would not go through. As a punishment, Torgeir and Frank give Thomas Aune a bath in freezing cold water until Thomas agrees to pay up. Frank suggests that Thomas can pay by giving him an apartment at the Sjusjøen Bellview.

Frank attends a presentation where Julius Backe, another owner of the Bellview, is giving a speech on the apartment complex. The complex is currently just an idea that he is trying to get approved. Tord, who is also attending, calls Julius out for the environmental concerns of the apartment as well as the fact that the apartments are supposed to be built over most of Tord's owned property, and that he is not interested in any bribes. Without Tord's consent, the apartment cannot be built, so Julius goes and cries in a room when his presentation is over. Frank briefly comforts Julius, and they agree that if Frank can get Tord to give up his property, Frank can get a free West-facing penthouse.

Frank is on his way to an event with Sigrid Haugli when he is pulled over by Geir Tvedt and has his car revoked due to his license not being legit. In reality, Geir pulled out Frank because he suspected him of being a terrorist. Sigrid goes to the bathroom later and discovers that she is pregnant with Frank's children. Meanwhile, Frank is attempting to get a license where he meets Dag Solstad for the first time, where Dag tells Frank that the process to getting a license in Norway takes a very long time. Frank practices driving with Dag, and it is not going well. Frank figures that he may as well stop at Tord's house while he's out driving. Tord refuses any form of convincing from Frank, quoting Ghandi's "Be the change that you wish to see in the world".

Later that night, Frank has Torgeir go and wreck up Tord's house as a form of "learning the hard way", and so Torgeir kills a chicken and throws it through the window of Tord and his wife's bedroom.

As it turns out, Jonas Haugli invited Frank to his birthday party without Sigrid knowing. Tord's child is also attending the party and is shown to be a weird kid. Frank gives Jonas a MacBook which is easily the nicest gift at the party. Sigrid attempts to tell Frank she is pregnant but is interrupted by Tord's child pointing a fake gun at her and going bananas. Afterwards, Frank says "That is why I never wanted to have kids", which stops Sigrid from telling Johnny anything.

Tord's wife tells Tord that she feels homesick and doesn't like living at the farm. She threatens to leave Tord with the children if he doesn't move back with her. Tord complies and gives the farm to Frank in his name. Frank meets with Julius just in time, and asks to be an owner of the Bellview.

Frank and Julius go to a Real Estate fair where Frank finds out that Thomas is marketing the apartments. Julius reassures Frank, saying that "He can sell camel shit to Arabs. He gets the job done." This is proven correct when Thomas pressures Dag into buying an apartment by taking advantage of his very attractive girlfriend. Frank tells Dag that he'll give him a large discount if he gets his driver's license quicker, which Dag complies with.

Geir causes a scene at a ski race that his boss had been preparing for for a long time. He accuses Frank of being a terrorist and attacks him because Frank is holding the toy gun which belongs to Jonas, and so his boss is forced to forfeit his win. Geir and Laila Hovland get in trouble for this.

The episode ends with Frank opening up Sigrid's purse to discover that she is pregnant.
